WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

In early 2002 the English National Opera hit upon an idea for raising their profile with the English public, a reality show to discover a new singer to grace their stage...

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

One of the new breed of reality shows, part game show and part reality Operatunity proves itself to be surprisingly compelling, over 2500 hopefuls auditioned for the series by sending in video tapes of them singing, after weeding those down to a hundred the drama begins in earnest as these 100 have to then prove themselves in front of the ENO judges - soon only 16 are left and unlike the traditional image of the opera singer these are from all walks of life from a girl who works in Tescos (a supermarket chain like Coles) to an investment banker to a blind man.

It's the human aspect that really captures the interest of course, how the contestants cope with the extensive

training and whilst we are not going to spoil things here by revealing the winner one of the best episodes is the follow up show picking up things a year later and whilst the series as a whole is definitely in reality country this segment is out and out documentary. An entertaining series that offers a spin on the genre.
