ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, Clifton Powell, Harry Lennix, Terence Dashon Howard

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

The life and often hard times of blind musical legend Ray Charles from his earliest days when an accident saw his younger brother drown and led to Ray's blindness through the long years of constant touring, trying to find his own style and through to his years of worldwide acclaim.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Jamie Foxx is Ray Charles, inhabiting the man's very soul, his every movement making you believe! Make no mistake about Foxx is very, very good in this classis biopic of one of music's great names and well deserves his Oscar nomination for best actor.

Director Hackford certainly doesn't shy away from some of the less publicised moments of Charles' life, I for one never suspected Charles of maintaining a heroin habit throughout most of the 1950's and his callous treatment of his first wife and the women in his life in general.

Opening with a hand playing out the chords to What I'd Say Ray is all about the music and there are some truly stunning songs on show here (Charles sings the songs himself) and some great set pieces from playing Mess Around in the Atlantic studios to the arrival of his backing band the Ralettes.

The movie, whose gorgeous set design is another major plus, ends in the mid 60's with Ray finally freeing himself from the demon drugs, Charles never really bettered his late fifties and early sixties period, so it does seem a worthwhile point to leave things.  Ray is a great movie, supremely entertaining, with a great central performance that has to be seen to really appreciate how good it is.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

This two disc set offers a whole multitude of extras including the chance to see the movie in an extended version that features 25 minutes of extra footage, there is also a great feature that gives us the chance to see complete and uncut musical performances from the film including a fantastic Hit the Road Jack, a documentary Walking In His Shoes which follows Foxx's fantastic transformation into Charles who was heavily involved in the making of the movie (the pair also perform together here), Ray Remembered is a feature in which his friends and fellow musos remember the man himself, there are also a set of 14 deleted scenes and an interesting commentary from director Taylor Hackford.
