Opening
with a hand playing out the chords to What I'd Say Ray is all about the
music and there are some truly stunning songs on show here (Charles
sings the songs himself) and some great set pieces from playing Mess
Around in the Atlantic studios to the arrival of his backing band the
Ralettes.
The
movie, whose gorgeous set design is another major plus, ends in the mid
60's with Ray finally freeing himself from the demon drugs, Charles
never really bettered his late fifties and early sixties period, so it
does seem a worthwhile point to leave things. Ray is a great
movie, supremely entertaining, with a great central performance that has
to be seen to really appreciate how good it is.
