ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn, Hattie Hayridge

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Three million years in the future space technician Dave Lister(the last human alive) is lost in space on the mining ship Red Dwarf with only a hologram, a mad robot servant and a part cat/human hybrid for company.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Red Dwarf V marked a distinct upturn in the quality of the look and feel of this quality scifi sitcom and Red Dwarf VI took it a stage further, in the space of a couple of series Red Dwarf had gone from being the low life cousin of Blakes 7 to being a glossy production looking like it was shot on film with more time given over to the intricacies of the scifi plotting. Storyline wise stand outs include first episode Holoship which sees Rimmer aboard the ultimate ship for Holograms and the legendary final episode Back to Reality which turns the whole concept on its head and made it look like everything that had gone before never happened, turns out the boys are trapped in a virtual reality game they've found aboard Starbug. Season VI upped the ante further, the boys are stranded on Starbug searching for Red Dwarf for most of this season, chief highlight amongst many is

episode Gunmen of the Apocolypse which has already gone down in Dwarf fandom as one of the shows best ever episodes, this sees the boys tangling with aliens on a planet that looks like the wild west, this episode also features the very brilliant Denis Lill of Survivors fame. These two series mark the apotheosis of RD, brilliantly funny and full of glossy scifi moments. Mark down as essential.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

As always the extras are superb on these Red Dwarf releases coming as they do on a bonus second disc that is choc full of extras, each set contain a feature length documentary on the making of each series as well as out-takes galore, a featurette on the American pilot which never took off, major looks at the visual effects, raw fx footage, trailers, idents and episode intros, isolated music cues, the Dave Hollins Space Cadet radio sketch which was the genesis of Red Dwarf, photo galleries, weblinks, a profile of composer Howard Goodall, a featurette on the real setting of Laredo, cast commentaries and fan commentaries as well as a veritable feast of Easter Eggs (all to be found on disc one incidentally). Fantastic!!!
