WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Canada’s
Second City TV sketch show makes
the leap to prime time US TV
with their fourth season, a full
on laugh fest this season sees
the episodes running 90 minutes
and the fun factor increasing
too.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Set
inside the environs of a TV station SCTV is often likened to Saturday
Night Live but whilst it does have similarities it is actually a show of
much wider dimensions (and we are not just talking about John Candy
either), many aspects of it are almost sitcom territory and is more akin
to something like Larry Sanders, regular characters include station boss
Guy Caballero (Flaherty) and station manager Edith Prickley (Martin)
whilst there were regular segments from the shows of Polka variety act
The Happy Wanderers aka Stan and Yosh Shmenge (Levy and Candy), Gil
Fisher the Fishin’ Musician (Candy again) and long running soap opera
The Days of the Week.
Often
inspired and frequently laugh out loud hilarious SCTV is never less than
entertaining, most of the cast of course would go on to be major players
in the movie business and this third sees the arrival of Martin Short
for the final three episodes.
Shout
Factory have put a lot of work into bringing us these SCTV collections,
this volume for instance includes a bonus CD of performances from the
music acts who would appear in each episode and there is plenty of
background info to add to our appreciation. It’s nice to see a quality
show like SCTV getting the treatment it so obviously deserves. If
you’ve never had the chance to sample the delights of SCTV then this
set offers up the perfect opportunity to do so.
ANY
SPECIAL FEATURES?
Besides
the CD there are other plentiful extras including featurettes looking
behind the scenes at the producers, a profile of John Candy, a doco
featuring the reminiscences of the cast and crew as well as footage from
SCTV’s inauguration at the museum of television and radio. Wrapping
things up is a John Candy photo gallery.
