One
of the quirkiest sitcoms of the
90's Third Rock From the Sun
packs in more hilarity in a
single episode than most modern
sitcoms can manage in a whole
run, the fantastic John Lithgow
headlines Dr Dick Solomon who is
professor of physics at
Pendleton University in
Rutherford
Ohio however in reality he is The High Commander and one of a quartet of
aliens who are spending time on Earth observing the ways of this
insignificant planet, his three fellow aliens also took human form, his
male lieutenant becomes the sexy female Sally (Kristen Johnson) whilst
the other two became archetypal Americans, senior officer Tommy (the
oldest) finds himself an hormonal teen whilst Harry is the eternal
dingbat.
Most
of the comedy of course comes from the quartet trying to adapt to their
new human bodies and new life on Earth, Lithgow's relationship with his
office mate at Pendleton, Dr Albright (played by Jane Curtin), Dick
seriously has the hots for Albright and would like to settle down with
her but his alien leader The Big Giant Head has other ideas.
This
four disc set from Anchor Bay features all 20 episodes of the first
season and like most Carsey Werner productions it's very funny. The high
laughter rate combined with some very groovy packaging including a
talking cover ("I find you pompous, judgemental and completely self
absorbed - will you be my friend") and a quality set of extras
makes Third Rock From The Sun an essential purchase.
