ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

The original Matrix movie released in the late 90’s put forward the theory that the world around us is a hoax, an elaborate deception spun by all-powerful machines of artificial intelligence that control us.  Enter Keanu Reeves as Neo (and some cinema redefining special effects) who is determined to break free from this virtual world and save mankind in the process, the following two movies, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, took a while to appear but carried on the story of Neo whilst deepening the mythology and the Matrix lifestyle.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

With its truly exhilarating action sequences and all conquering bid for film of the Decade the original Matrix really did change the way action movies are made, referenced and pastiched ad infinitum since The Matrix is a stunning concept, tapping into every conspiracy, drug induced what if the world has ever had, the Wachowski brothers knocked us sideways.

Following up several years later with the shot back to back Reloaded and Revolutions the Wachowski’s found the playing field had moved somewhat, what with the world domination of the Lord of the Rings cycle sweeping all before it.

Reloaded is somewhat of a holding station, cleverly expanding and expounding upon the ideas and themes of the first movie but still contains some amazing sequences (witness Neo’s fight with a 100 evil agent smiths – all played by Hugo Weaving.) Revolutions cuts down on the exposition and wisely sticks to what the Matrix series does best, huge action scenes and special effects galore, most notably with the machines attack on human kinds last stranglehold Zion.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

Without question one of the biggest box sets yet released, this humongous 10 disc set from Warners contains not just all three movies each with a separate disc of extras but the Animatrix series of short anime movies that fully reference all three Matrix movies and are considered part of the canon by The Wachowski brothers, you also get hours upon hours of extra material and quite literally thousands of images and artwork from the movies.

To break it down here is what the box set contains.

DISC ONE this is obviously The Matrix but presented in a very good, sharp and somewhat brighter remastered version.  Each of the three movies also feature two audio commentaries, one philosophical in nature from Cornel West and Todd McCarthy (actual philosophers both) and one from film critics Todd McCarthy, John Powers and David Thomson (these commentaries are actually refreshingly honest)

DISC TWO is The Matrix Revisited – this is the previously released 90 minute very indepth documentary dissecting the original movie. There are also stacks of bonus featurettes on this disc, best of them being a look at the music that inspired the Wachowski brothers whilst they were making the movies.

DISC THREE is The Matrix Reloaded and two further audio commentaries.

DISC FOUR is The Matrix Reloaded Revisited which instead of being a single documentary is made up of lots of individual featurettes.

DISC FIVE is The Matrix Revolutions and commentaries.

DISC SIX is The Matrix Revolutions Revisited which features an amazing 29 short features (you can choose to watch these either separately or all together).

DISC SEVEN is The Animatrix collection, 9 short anime flavoured films that look into (and act as a bridge between movies) the world of the Matrix. This disc also contains a 55 minute documentary examining the shorts.

DISC EIGHT is The Roots of the Matrix which features two long documentaries going deep inside the philosophical world of the matrix Return to Source: Philosophy & The Matrix examines all the spiritual and philosophical concepts which influenced the Wachowskis in making the movies whilst The Hard Problem: The Science Behind the Fiction is a fascinating and somewhat disturbing look at how machines are already taking over our everyday lives.

DISC NINE is The Burly Man Chronicles is a 90 minute doco that follows the shooting of the final two movies from conception to release.

DISC TEN is The Zion Archive, a huge wealth of production materials including concept artwork, storyboards, drawings, music videos, photo galleries, TV spots and trailers.

Comprehensive and amazing.
