ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Alexei Sayle, Angus Deayton, Mark Williams, Felicity Montagu, Tony Millan, Harriet Thorpe

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

A sketch-based comedy show punctuated by stand-up style rants from Alexei Sayle as he delivers his comic observations on modern Britain (or as it was in the late 80s anyway).

This is the first series of six episodes from 1988.  The show ran for three series until 1991 and became "The All New Alexei Sayle Show" in 1994 which ran for a further 2 series.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

I expect Alexei Sayle fans will need no convincing.  But for non-fans (like myself) this is pretty poor stuff.  The main problem with the show is Alexei Sayle himself - he's just not very funny.  You can see him trying to be funny - his pieces-to-camera as he delivers his observations are punctuated with twee and manic expressions which are obviously intended to be funny and entertaining but just come across as annoying.

The sketches themselves vary wildly in quality - some aren't funny at all and others have a few germs of a good idea - only a few actually seem genuinely funny - an example of a quite good one is when the International Olympics committee are looking round a council house in London with a view to staging the Olympics inside it.

Another is a man who attends a drinks party held by triffids; and another is where some fireman get dainty new uniforms and prance around like fashion models while out on the job.  But tellingly these are sketches in which Alexei Sayle does not appear.

When he does appear in the sketches he tends to dominate and kill-off any potential humour.  Perhaps Alexei Sayle's best sketch is the one which forms the opening title sequence of each episode - in which a ridiculously handsome man arrives at BBC TV centre and all the girls look longingly at him - then he goes into the make-up chair has his head shaved, puts on a padded suit, and has prosthetics applied to his face and comes out as ... Alexei Sayle!

The real comedy talent in the show comes from two of the co-stars.  Angus Deayton - whose delivery style is perfect and enhances any material he is performing, and Mark Williams - later to become part of The Fast Show team.  Both of those actors are still familiar faces in 2005.  In contrast I've not seen Alexei Sayle on TV for many many years so perhaps I'm not the only one who doesn't rate him very highly as a mainstream comedy performer - although obviously he must have been popular enough at the time to have warranted 5 series of his show.

Overall, unless you really like Alexei Sayle this might not be a very rewarding watch.
