ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Tim Marlow

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

The Easter Story has long held incredible fascination for artists across time, the story of Christ's betrayal, crucifixtion and resurrection has inspired some of the greatest artists of all time. This 3 part documentary, previously seen on SBS and presented by Tim Marlow, explores the story of Easter using all manner of paintings from around the world and different periods of time.

Beginning with a look at the Betrayal of Jesus as depicted in the last supper Marlow shows us the earliest surviving version - a 6th century Mosaic as well  as Chris Ofili's contemporary interpretation "This work seems as real - if not more real - than Leonardo's. It has this tangible presence," is his comment on the work.

Episode two covers The Crucifixion and never has there been a more iconic image than of the crucifixtion of Jesus Christ, the earliest known images date from the 5th century but the most impressive is a series of frescos and sculptures from the 15th century that can be found in Varello, Northern Italy. Modern artist Sebastian Horsley took his inspiration for his version from a visit to the Phillipines where he experienced the sensation of crucifixion first hand.

The third and final part is Resurrection, the rising from the dead of Jesus, Marlow looks at works by Giotto and Michaelangelo as well the eccentric Stanley Spencers vision which relocated the action to his own local churchyard.

Marlow is an enthusiastic presenter and by roaming across all types of art from the classic to the modern we do gain a wider sense of the impact of The Easter Story. A simple idea that is very well executed and watchable.
