WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Created
by Ian Kennedy Martin (who also
created The Sweeney) Juliet
Bravo is a great police
procedural drama series from the
early 1980's , a kind of rural Z
Cars the show follows Inspector
Jean Darblay, a woman trying to
make her mark in a male
dominated world - on English TV
especially, Juliet Bravo (along
with Jill Gascoine in The Gentle
Touch) was something of a
vanguard.

This
second season, nicely mounted in a four disc set by 2|Entertain,
contains all thirteen episodes from the season, Stephanie Turner is
clearly settling into her role but her character Jean Darblay (Juliet
Bravo is actually her call sign) is having something of a tough time of
it in the first episode New Arrivals with new Chief Superintendant
Hallam (played by James Grout who is probably best known as Supt Strange
in Inspector Morse) who makes it clear that he believes Jean should be
at home tied to the kitchen, she soon puts him straight of course but it
doesn't make life easier for her.

Other
key episodes include Lies and Liars which stars the excellent Jeff Rawle
as a pet shop owner whose affinity with kids causes concern amongst
their parents; Aunt Sally stars the brilliant Margery Mason as a store
detective who is unwilling to come to terms with her imminent retirement
and Journeys guest stars Geoffrey Bayldon as a petty crook who is hiding
a major secret.
Filmed
in and around Bacup in the Rossendale Valley, Lancashire Juliet Bravo is
an enjoyable series that even after 20 plus years stands up to repeated
viewing.
