ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Chris O'Donnell, Timothy Hutton, John Lithgow

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

A bio-pic of an (in)famous American researcher who in the 1940s set about to conduct the biggest study on human sexual behaviour ever attempted.

Alfred Kinsey (Liam Neeson) was a zoologist collecting and cataloguing thousands of species of gall wasp.  He taught at a university and when some students approached him about their marital difficulties he began to realise that very little was known about what was "normal" and some couples had some very strange misconceptions about how to conduct their sex lives.  He started a "Marriage" class at his college which included sex education and conducting a questionnaire survey using the techniques he had honed in his zoological studies.

This project grew and grew and received funding from a research foundation and eventually Kinsey and his team interviewed thousands of subjects from all over the country.   This film charts the progression of his work and his marriage and the way his work was received when published.

Is It Any Good?

It's a very interesting film about a man obsessed with his work and gives you an insight into what drove him to complete his studies.  Kinsey is well played and believable and the film is well structured and never dull.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

The film has an interesting commentary track by writer/director Bill Condon in which he explains how the project got off the ground and the various twists and turns of its development.

There are 20 or so deleted scenes - also with an optional commentary track in which Bill Condon explains why they were  left out - one of the deleted scenes explains the origin of the term "S&M" - apparently Kinsey and his team used abbreviations to describe certain sexual terminology so they could discuss things freely in public places like restaurants without causing an outcry.

There is also a 3 minute gag reel of fluffs and outtakes.
