WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

It was never going to be easy to re-do one of the UK’s biggest sitcoms since Fawlty Towers,  Ricky Gervais had come up with one of TV’s legendary characters in David Brent and the UK series is in

reality built around his performance, this US version wisely opts for more of an ensemble feel. Steve Carell takes on the Brent role, here renamed Michael Scott and the action takes place in the admin section of the Dunder Mifflin paper supply company, the first episode pretty much transplants the script from the UK premier episode but after that the show manages to find its own voice, the supporting cast are particularly good especially Kraskinski as salesman Jim.

This new release from Universal features all 6 first season episodes and while it is a little bit of a slow burner by the third episode you have forgotten about the original and are enjoying the show on it’s own merits, it also benefits from not having a laugh track, the humour is subtle and we certainly don’t need it signposted.  If you are a fan of the original you will still want to take a look at this one and see what it’s like, if you have yet to spend some time in The Office then this is the ideal opportunity.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

Extras include some very funny deleted scenes and an audio commentary.
