WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

It's fantastic to see that Roadshow and ABC have joined forces to bring us some of the Light Opera classics from their and Opera Australia's archives, the first four releases all focus on Gilbert and Sullivan, in all their pomp and humour.

The performances mostly come from the Sydney Opera House (HMS Pinafore was recorded at The Arts Centre in Melbourne) and range from 1987's The Mikado to this years double bill of HMS Pinafore and Trial by Jury and are a riot of stunning set design, dazzling costumes and amazing singing. The cream of Australian operatic talent is on display here too of course from the likes of Anthony Warlow to Heather Begg.

The enjoyment factor will of course depend on your Gilbert and Sullivan appreciation factor but for me there's always a high humour quotient that elevates even the most tongue twisting lyric and storyline. The most well known Opera here is The Mikado but the real gem is the 1995 production of Patience, a Thomas Hardyesque tale of a milk maid and her two poet suitors.

None of the four titles in this set (all of which are available to buy separately) have any extras but for any fan of the genre will definitely be deemed essential.

THE TITLES

THE GONDOLIERS
Set in Venice, The Gondoliers is a quirky tale of two handsome gondoliers who discover, that shortly after they get married, that one of them is a long lost prince. Unfortunately, it is not clear which one of the two is the prince, and until the mystery is solved, they rule jointly. A further complication arises when it is revealed that the prince was married as a child to a princess. The result ? Two husbands, three wives, an unknown prince and a state of confusion.

THE MIKADO
Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado, leaves home and disguises himself as a musician to escape a distasteful marriage and meets a beautiful girl. The Mikado is the comedy classic in which W.S. Gilbert's 'topsy-turvy' words met with a supreme musical response from Sir Arthur Sullivan. This is the most widely-loved and, by general agreement, hilarious of the Savoy Operas, set in a wonderfully make-believe Japan.

PATIENCE
Regina Bunthorne is a poet, adored by all the ladies, except one - Patience, the village millk maid. Patience cannot understand why all the ladies adore him whilst Bunthorne wants to marry her. However, it all becomes complicated when another poet Archibald Grosvenor arrives and also falls in love with her and proposes. Patience is a comic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta in two acts set in the 20th Century.

HMS PINAFORE AND TRIAL BY JURY
Gilbert & Sullivan's light hearted take on how power and influence turn marriage into a mating game with more than love at stake. This is the perfect show for Opera novices, Gilbert & Sullivan afficiamdos and long term opera supporters alike.
