Lena
's wartime story is then seen:- she is
a true Aryan woman married to a Jewish husband and therefore known as a
gentile. Her husband is taken by the nazis and held at a former
Jewish welfare office in the town of
Rosenstrasse
. Young Ruth's mother is also
held there and that is where
Lena
first starts caring for the
essentially orphaned child. Husbands of gentiles are supposed to
be exempt from the Jewish deportation rules and
Lena
and the other affected wives hold a
constant vigil outside the prison demanding the release of their
husbands.
It
is a very powerful and emotive drama that is well told in the two eras
it is set, both of which are played out in an interesting manner and
both serving to usefully advance the story further as the narrative
shifts back and forth between them.
The ending is sure to bring a tear to your eyes.
