WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Last year I was lucky enough to ride on the legendary 3801 (thanks to a two year old with a train obsession) at the Thirlmere Steam Festival and although it was only a short trip it did bring home the majesty of these glorious old steam engines.
A Legend in Steam, originally seen on the ABC back in 1986, is an excellent glimpse into the world of this engine.

The Pacific Class 38's were the first engines made to be specifically Australian and quickly became the stuff of legend, responsible for record breaking runs from Sydney to Newcastle as well the first unbroken steam run from Sydney to Melbourne. In 1970 the 3801 travelled across Australia to Perth. Much of the material on the DVD comes from the archives of cameramen (and steam nuts) Jim Powe and Jim Revitt and some of the best material focuses on the full overhaul that the 3801 underwent in 1986 as well as the bi-centennial celebrations and Austeam 88 that the 3801 was heavily involved in.
The 3801 had it's inaugural trip in 1943 and is still goign strong today, in fact its now the most travelled locomotive in Australia and has carried over 500,000 passengers. Unfortunately the future of the 3801 is looking troubled with a 20 year lease

agreement due to expire in November this year and its operatig depot at Eveleigh under threat of closure thanks to developers. It will be a real crying shame if the only chance we get to experience the 3801 is in DVD's, no matter how excellent.

Hopefully the huge number of rail enthusiasts will get together to save the 3801 and in the meantime this Roadshow DVD IS a great tribute to a fantastic engine.
