WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

This wonderfully heart stirring period tale is based on the true story of Canadian soldier (and vet) Lt Harry Colebourn who has rescued a bear cub from the hands of a hunter, Christening the bear Winnie (after his hometown of Winipeg) Harry is soon the regimental mascot of Harry's platoon, however when the regiment is ordered to the trenches Harry decides to leave Winnie in the care of London zoo (cue a typically eccentric Stephen Fry performance as zookeeper Protheroe.

Winnie is soon one of the main attractions (so famous was she that A.A. Milne's son Christopher Robin named the bear he got for his first birthday Winnie in her honour - Milne would later immortalise the bear as Winnie the Pooh!) however when the war is finally over Harry has a tough decision to make.
Made for Canadian TV A Bear Called Winnie is a lovely slice of family viewing, heart tugging in all the right places and with nice performances all round, David Suchet plays a small but important role as General Hollholland who appoints Winnie as regimental mascot.
The earliest parts where Harry and his best friend McCray try to keep the boisterous Winnie under wraps provide the most entertainment but its also the part that has you reaching for your hanky as Winnie comes close to being shot by senior officer Barret (Gil Bellows) who has a real hatred for Winnie.

A great family movie which is something of a rarity in these increasingly jaded MA15+ times that we live in. Recommended.
