THE LOW DOWN

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!

Scifi drama series. Superman fights evil whilst working in his guise of Clark Kent for newspaper The Daily Planet.  Seasons 1 & 2 were made in black and white (There were 52 colour and 52 black and white in fact) and the show was the first science fiction show to be shown on the ITV network in the UK.

THE VERDICT

When I was a schoolkids growing up in England back in the early 80's one of the regular highlights of the school holidays was re-runs of this classic 1950's action adventure series, this set brings the series to a close and features episodes 79 - 104.

There's a gorgeous naivety about this series, the special effects might be limited (lets face it Superman can be seen using a jumping board to make his leap into the sky) and lots of the same flying sequences are used over and over again and Superman himself seems to do battle with everyday crooks rather than aliens intent on world domination.

There's a noticeable change in these final two seasons to a more humorous tone and of course

its well documented that George Reeves struggled to find work after Superman finished and although his 1959 death by shooting was classed as suicide although recent movie Hollywoodland (starring Ben Affleck as Reeves) casts doubts upon this.

If you haven't seen this series then you really are missing out, its full of brillliant 1950's pop culture moments and a Lois Lane with orange hair. Great fun!
