WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

When I first came to Australia a few years ago I tried to get a soccer team together, the five aside team I mustered managed to come runners up in the Grand Final in our first season before work commitments meant the team just fizzled out, a bit like the

state of Australian football at the time really, sad. What a difference five years and an influx of cash can make; Over 40,000 fans packed the Aussie stadium to watch the very first Hyundai A-League Grand Final.

The 8 clubs in the league come from all over Australia and theres even a team from New Zealand (the Knights) but the glamour club are Sydney FC with world cup winner Pierre Litbarski as coach and former Man United star player Dwight Yorke as striker, they were always going to be favourites to carry off the trophy but their opponents, Central Coast Mariners, were the real underdogs, imagine a fourth division UK club getting to the FA Cup final against premiership giants Chelsea and thats the size of the Mariners task. The plucky little minnows had played outside themselves all season to win a deserved place in the grand final.

Just in case you've been hiding behind a goal post all season we won't reveal the final score (although the cover of the disc makes it plain who won) but the DVD captures all the excitement and action and makes a great momento of a stunning inaugural season.
With the world cup sure to generate even more interest this year it looks like this could be the start of a new era in Aussie soccer and I for one won't be complaining.
