BARNYARD - THE ORIGINAL PARTY ANIMALS
Distributor: Paramount Home Entertainment

Certificate PG
Director:
Steve Oedekerk

WHO'S IN IT
Kevin James, Sam Elliott, Danny Glover, Courteney Cox, Wanda Sykes, Andie McDowell

THE LOW DOWN

Otis (voiced by Kevin James) is a carefree party cow who enjoys singing, dancing and playing tricks on humans. Unlike his father Ben (voiced by Sam Elliott), the respected patriarch of the farm, and Miles, the wise old mule (voiced by Danny Glover), Otis is unconcerned about keeping the animals’ humanlike talents a secret. But when suddenly put in the position of responsibility, the “udderly” irresponsible cow finds the courage to be a leader.

THE VERDICT

A fully CGI project from Nickelodeon, Barnyard packs a great deal of laughs and a very funky soundtrack into its 86 minutes. Coming on like a cross between Animal Farm and The Lion King there are some nicely amusing set pieces (such as when the animals steal a biker gangs Harley's to get home in time for an important new arrival and some feel good barn dancing that fails to stop even when the farmer turns up) and enough slapstick to keep even the youngest viewer involved.

Of course one of the first things you can't help but notice is that the male cows all have udders, not sure why but like director Oedekerk says - udders are funny. Apparently there is a Barnyard series in the works at Nickelodeon so whether the movie was always intended as a pilot or not it stands up more than well enough as a movie in its own right.

A fun enough family movie then and remember what happens in the barn, stays in the barn...
