as firemen only to get called out to a real fire, the legendary bomb in the bank episode and the "boys" having to deal with a German parachutist stuck on the town hall clock.
Dad's Army is wonderfully funny of course but the success of the show is down to more than that, it carries with it a wonderful nostalgic
melancholy fuelled yearning for times past when duty was important and people "did their bit". It's also full of some of the best elderly comic actors of the era of course and by the time of this fifth series they are positively glowing with the enjoyment of playing in the series, they've all got their little catchphrases that they manage to get into each episode.
By now writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft (who would utilise a similar wartime setting for their follow up series It Ain't Half Hot Mum) were widening out the circle somewhat with other characters also making regular appearances.
