WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Channel
4 in the UK have recently been
showing a series of
documentaries telling the story
of the Real Dad's Army,
featuring plenty of ace
contributions by Dad's Army
co-creator Jimmy Perry and what
was fantastic about that was
even though the show

Dad's
Army is a sitcom it was also really how it was back in the dark days of
world war II with one rifle to every 17 soldiers and using potatoes to
practice your hand grenade technique. Roadshow
are now up to season four (from 1970) with their releases of Dad's Army,
the first couple of series were in black and white but we are in full
colour now, 13 classic episodes spread over two discs and for many this
series is often considered to be the quintessential set of episodes with
all the regulars getting the chance to shine and some superbly funny set
pieces. Stand out episodes include Private Walker supply the mascot for
the Spitfire Week parade in The Big Parade; Corporal Jones war record
coming into question in Two and A Half Feathers; the towns women
getting

involved
in Mum's Army; The Platoon taking on the ARP Wardens (and their ring in
fast bowler) at cricket in The Test and Sgt Wilson getting the chance of
promotion in A. Wilson. Manager. Seriously though there isn't a duff
episode here. A true series to savour.
Any
Special Features?
Each
of these Dad's Army releases so far have included a great little
featurette focusing on a different member of the platoon called We Are
The Boys, this time the awesome James Beck (who played the spiv Private
Walker of course) is featured, Beck died young and the series never
really managed to replace him.
