WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

It seems every season of Dallas seemed to build on what had gone before and raise the stakes accordingly, by the time of its fifth season it was quite simply the most popular show in the world, the who shot JR antics and aftermath of seasons three and four had catapulted it into the stratosphere and again it is JR

who munches up every scene he is in and proves himself to be one of the most despicable characters ever seen on TV.

The season has a real shock in store, Jock Ewing, patriarch of the family, is dead (Jim Davis who played the role died between seasons) killed in an air crash whilst on a business trip to South America and whilst his mother is busy grieving JR is busy scheming, aiming to wrest complete control of Ewing Oil away from his brother Bobby and trying to win back his wife Sue Ellin and son John Ross (mainly so that he can control John Ross's shares too). With Sue Ellen busy being smooched by rival Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval) JR decides to put Cliff out of business once and for all.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, as it were, Lucy is struggling to cope with her divorce, Bobby's wife Pam is desperate for a baby (which leads to Bobby attempting to "buy" one for her) whilst Ray is determined to prove he also has a head for business with some dodgy real estate ventures. He also puts his marriage on the line with an affair.

As involving to watch again now (hard to believe that this season is from 1982) Dallas really does make for superior viewing. With Warner releasing the whole series in very nice box sets its also the perfect time to reacquaint yourself with this super soaper.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

The only extra is the excellent A Living Landmark: A Tour of the Real Southfork Ranch
