WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

When Dangerfield first screen back in 1995 it was seen by the critics as something of the ultimate in formula TV, take one suave and handsome doctor, make him a widow with a teenage son and daughter, make the doctor be on attachment to the local

constabulary as a police surgeon, stir for fifty minutes and voila the perfect series for the 1990's. All of that is true of course but Dangerfield turned out to be surprisingly strong drama, created by Don Shaw, as is evident on this release of the first series in a 2 disc set by 2|Entertain.
Nigel Le Vaillant fresh from a star making role in Casualty headlined as Dr Paul Dangerfield who at the series start is going through some emotional times coping with the death of his wife in a car crash and trying to look after his two kids Marty (Sean Maguire) and Allison(Lisa Faulkner); His fellow doctors in the practice where he was a GP included Joanna Stevens (Amanda Redman) but Dangerfield preferred his role as Police Surgeon where he usually managed to get a bit too personally involved in the cases he was called to help out on.

This first series manages to incorporate the crime and caring aspects with the soapier aspects of Dangerfields home life without over egging the pudding too much. Later series, which would see the eventual departure of star Le Vaillant, replaced by equally smooth Nigel Havers, tended to focus far more on the crime of the week scenario but this first series has a much better mix. Definitely worth reaquainting yourself with.
