WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

In a long and varied career Ian McShane probably wouldn't have anticipated that he would win a golden globe for playing one of American TV's most amazing pieces of work, evil and brutal Al Swearingen is the unofficial town boss of the Black Hills outlaw camp of Deadwood.

It's 1877 and at the start of this second season Deadwood is growing a pace heading right into becoming a town; Seth Bullock is town sheriff and Cy Tolliver is a brothel owner and Al's chief rival in town. Probably the most realistic portrayal of the old west yet seen, foul of mouth and mean of heart Deadwood is fantastic and compelling drama.

All 12 episodes from season two are spread over the four discs in this handsome box set from Paramount and key issues of the season include politics (the town has to make a decision about which state it

should join), the battle for prominence among the town brothels and Sheriff Bullock's tangled love life, he has been seeing Alma Garret but his wife and kids have returned to Deadwood.

The production design on Deadwood is superb and the writing is always top notch,  wringing out drama of almost Shakespearian overtones, amongst all the swearing that is. Deadwood is the kind of show that's so full of subplots that several viewings are essential to pick up on the bits missed first time round. Ideal DVD material then.
