THE
VERDICT
First
screened in 1975 The Sontaran Experiment
is prime era Tom Baker,
something of an experiment not
just with the story but the
filming as well, the first two
parter for over ten years and
also the first story completely
shot outside the studio on
videotape. Something of a
companion piece to The Ark in
Space, set in the same time
period and written by the always
good value Bob Baker and Dave
Martin you do get the impression
that The Sontaran Experiment is
not to be taken too seriously.
The plot doesn't quite hold up -
after all why would the Sontaran
battle fleet not bother invading
a seemingly uninhabited earth, preferring
instead to spend most of one
episode debating how well human
kind could withstand an
attack.

The
action and excitement level is
well maintained throughout the
story, watch out too for the
obvious stand in for Baker in
the action scenes, the fourth
doctor had actually broken a
collar bone early in the filming
and was obviously unable to take
part in anything more strenuous
than jelly baby eating. A good
addition to the range.
