WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Ang Lee's follow up to The Weding Banquet covers similar ground in a way but with a bigger budget and a slightly more
complex storyline, again it touches on the nature of families and the way they communicate (or don't as the case may be).

Filmed in Taiwan, the centre of the plot is the relationship between ageing master chef Tao Chu (Lung) and his three grown up
daughters Jia-Jen (Yang) an unmarried teacher,
Jia-Chen a career minded airline executive and youngest daughter Jia-Ning
(Wang) who works in a fast food restaurant .
Chu finds it incredibly
difficult to express love to his dughters for to express emotion
would admit to a vulnerability but his greatest wish is for his girls to settle down and find love.
The real star of the movie though is the food prepared by Chu for the weekly family dinners that the family have, loving shot

and
mouth wateringly guaranteed to make you hungry the cooking scenes act as a sort of metaphor for the family, the only way they
truly connect is through food, also a heavy presence in the movie is Taiwan itself, from the streets to the countryside, an area not
seen too often on film thats for sure. Eat Drink Man Woman was Lee's first movie made in his native Taiwan and is another in his
series of movies dealing with familial relationships. An entertaining comedy drama.
