WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

This exciting ensemble drama series tells stories of Squad 51 of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Paramedical Rescue Service. Mixed in with this is life at the hospital where the injured are taken.

Overseen by Jack Webb and filmed in the documentary type style of his own Dragnet

series, this starred Kevin Tighe and Randolph Mantooth as Paramedics Ray DeSoto and John Gage who would find themselves on three or four occasions per episode rushing to the scene of one accident or another.

The other regular characters included Dr's Kelly Brackett and Joe Early, nurse Dixie McCall, Captain Hank Stanley (who was introduced in this series and gradually became one of the pivotal characters) and firemen Marco Lopez, Chet Kelly and Mike Stoker. As a kid Emeregency was one of the few series that I wouldn't miss and I hadn't seen an episode of it for at least 25 years, despite some dodgy back projection and obvious studio set rescues it stands up incredibly well, the cast are all working well together and this second season has an impressive range of guest stars including Dick Van Patten, Deirdre Hall and a very young John Travolta.

The three disc box set features all 21 episodes from the season on doubel sided discs, the packaging says that the running time is 7 hours and 47 minutes but thats obviously a misprint has total running time would be more than double that.

There are no extras on this set, a good idea for future series would be to try and include episodes of the animated spin off from 1973 called Emergency Plus 4 which saw the team helped by a quartet of kids. It was great to be abloe to catch up with this series once again and it comes highly recommended.

The shorter 11 episode first season (which also includes the feature length pilot) is also now on DVD.
