THE LOWDOWN

The final season of all time great cartoon The Flintstones is now available on DVD in a handsome 4 disc set from Warner, the series of course is set in the stone age town of Bedrock, Cobblestone Count, where crane driver Fred Flinstone works hard to bring home the bacon for his wife Wilma, daughter Pebbles and pet dinosaur Dino.

Fred's best friend was neighbour Barney Rubble who was married to Betty, they too had a young child (adopted) called Bamm Bamm.

THE VERDICT

The sixth and final season of this iconic cartoon, clear forerunner of the Simpsons, with its grown up audience aimed situations. The handsome box set features all 26 episodes from the season and highlights, like in previous seasons, are the pop culture take offs of shows like Bewitched (featuring the voices of Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York) as well as Hollywood movies with the classic The Treasure of Sierra Madrock and the Return of Stoney Curtis. Best episode of all though is The Long Long Weekend which sees Fred and Barney visited by space alien The Great Gazoo, unfortunately they are unable to convince anybody of his existance because only they can see him.

The Flintstones was more than just a cartoon, it was a window to the world of the concerns of the people of the sixties. It was also laugh out loud hilarious with the two families at the heart of the series living in the stone age but with all the conveniences of the modern age and a dinosaur instead of a pet dog. Full of clever little touches and sight gags galore The Flintstones was and still is one of the smartest shows to grace the small screen.

THE EXTRAS

The Flintstones Meet Pop Culture: Stephen Baldwin hosts a look at the effect of pop culture on the show, and vice versa The Great Gazoo: From A to Zetox
