WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Eight years ago mob-flunkey Louie saved the life of a young black man being mugged on the street and thought no more of it. Then 4 years ago that same man turned up on his doorstep and said he owed Louie a debt of honour and from then on became a retainer carrying out hits for him. The man calls himself Ghost Dog.

Ghost Dog is a reclusive solitary man who follows the teachings and philosophy of a book Hagakure: The Way of the Warrior. His only joy are the pigeons he keeps and he and Louie keep in contact via messages relayed by the birds. Ghost Dog is a valuable resource to Louie, highly professional, dependable and untraceable.

But then one hit does not go as planned and the daughter of the mob leader Ray Vargo sees Ghost Dog carrying out the kill. This angers Vargo and he orders Ghost Dog to be eliminated. But this isn't that easy because not even Louie knows where he lives. So the mob visit everyone who keeps birds and when Ghost Dog returns home to find all his birds murdered he decides to take vengeance and single handily wipe out the entire mob family.

Is It Any Good? It's a very absorbing story that keeps its eyes firmly on the road with a highly focussed tale that doesn't get bogged down with any confounding subplots.

Obviously in reality Ghost Dog would be considered a murderous criminal but in the context of this fiction you find yourself gunning for him and his mission of revenge. There are some quiet moments of character development too when he makes friends with a young schoolgirl in a park and they discuss their favourite books.

Overall it's a good diverting thriller film.
