WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

It's thanksgiving 1973 in the town of New Canaan, Connecticut and the somewhat dysfunctional Hood family are falling apart before our eyes. Ben and Elena (Kline and Allen) on the surface have the perfect marriage with two great kids, 16 year old Paul

(Maguire) is at prep school whilst 14 year old Wendy (Ricci) feels she is ready to explore more of what life has to offer, matters come to a head when Ben begins a fling with neighbour Sigourney Weaver.

A real air of melancholy hangs over The Ice Storm, due in no small part to he huge storm that blankets the town in ice and also to the questing nature of the characters, 1973 was a major year of

upheaval of course, Tricky Dicky Nixon was about to fall down the slippery pole and the Vietnam war was causing major cynisism for the government, Lee captures this period beautifully, the production design is fantastic and the little details are excellent, pretty amazing really when you consider that Lee wasn't even in America at that time.

The cast too is amazing, Kline proves what a great actor he is, even though his character is intrinsically unlikeable he still manages to elict empathy with the audience and Christina Ricci steals pretty much every scene she is in. Following on from The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman and the huge success of Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm proves that Lee has a real fine talent for intimate dramas of human relationships.

A sensitive and sometimes slow moving tale The Ice Storm still offers plenty of rewards for the viewer.  something interesting to say about a story
