ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Japanese anime

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

The story is set near an enchanted forest where in the present day the heroine Kagome lives. She has discovered an ancient shrine through which she can travel back 500 years into the past where she teams up with the hero Inuyasha and a band of fellow adventurers on a quest.

Their ongoing quest is explained at the beginning of the movie. Some time previously a sacred jewel of Sword Souls was shattered and the shards scattered all over the forest area. The shards have the property of increasing the power of demons and Inuyasha's group are attempting to collect these shards before they can be misused.

In this story one of the shards has awoken the slumber of a powerful demon called Menoumaru who lives amid the roots of the Tree of Ages. He is destined to inherit the power of his ancestors and becomes a formidable super-demon who sustains himself by consuming the souls of others.

The demon grows to gigantic proportions and is protected by powerful magical energy and the heroes must find a way to defeat this seemingly unbeatable foe.

Is It Any Good? The animation style is largely free-flowing and not at all like the lazy sound-bite animation that often dominates this type of anime story. It is mostly handdrawn 2D animation with some 3D flourishes rather than the flashy 3D style that is currently popular.

The film has its own rich internal mythology and character history and although it gives newcomers a commendable catch-up near the start which provides the essentials to understand key points you do still feel that there is a lot of detail that is probably understood or appreciated only by established fans of the series.

The threat faced here by the heroes is sufficiently menacing that the difficulty they face in overcoming it is completely plausible and you can believe they are on the edge. Overall it is an entertaining effort with an epic scope that has some impressive sequences.
