WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Another slice of classic scifi from the mind of Shaun Cassidy, Invasion premiered Fall 2005 on the ABC and it was quickly obvious to the discerning
viewer that the show was something a little bit more than just your alien of the week type scenario. The drama starts with when a Hurricane rips
though the town of Homestead, Florida and whilst the aftermath hits the town hard with power out and
homes destroyed there's also something
more going on in the town, people are different, in fact they may even be extra terrestrial.

|
Two families are at the heart of the series, the Varons and the Underlays (who are linked by the fact that Sheriff Tom Underlay (William
Fichtner) is married to Russell Varon's ex wife), it's not long before Tom realises something is going on in the town and sets out to get to the bottom of the
mystery.
Similar in style to Cassidy's American Gothic and with a strong emphasis on family values, Vanished is high quality drama and its such a shame
and hard to fathom why the ABC network saw fit to cancel the show, so we are left up in the air as to the outcome of the series. What Cassidy
and his production company should have done is created an event show that was only ever going to run for one season, bump up the hype
factor ala Lost and then when the network was clamouring for a second season just walk away, it would have been far preferable than having a
show that is then never able to fulfil its potential and a single season if played right through to a proper finish would have prevented any of that
feeling of a show losing its way as it tries to build its episode count, after all the second season of Lost was nowhere as dynamic as the first but if
the answered had been revealed at the end of the first series then it would have been a show that was talked about for years.

There is quite a
groundswell of grass roots support for the show so you never know it could find a second life like Firefly and in the meantime it is certainly worth
reacquainting yourself with on DVD.
