WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Back in the early 90's with satellite TV about to try and take over the viewing world BBC2 poked some fun at the genre with the high quality KYTV, named after its owner Kenneth Yellowhammer KYTV was a fledgling start up whose presented ranged from the inept to the just plain stupid.

Part sitcom and part sketch show KYTV features some of the key names in late 80's comedy including Angus Deayton (who before he became a quiz show host and News of the World headline grabber was actually a good comedy bet), the excellent Geoffrey Perkins, Helen Atkinson Wood (now whatever happened to her, she was really good) and all rounder Philip Pope.

There are punning names (Deayton plays Mike Channel and Atkinson Wood is Anna Daptor) and send ups of every type of show from travelogue to religious programming, each show itself is rather spuriously themed too, the pilot is called Siege Side Special and focuses on KYTV's lame attempts to provide an exclusive on a terrorist seige, other episodes take the form of a Royal Wedding special and an Anneka Rice take off in the form of Challenge Anna.

Whilst not quite up to the standard of The Day Today, KYTV is still pretty funny and was of course there first with many of the ideas The Day Today and even the recent Broken News plundered. It's studio sets do seem a little dated now but that's a minor quibble - the humour content is high enough to make for enjoyable viewing.
