WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Having grown out of an episode of the BBC's legendary Comedy Playhouse series and written by the well respected Roy Clarke Last of the Summer Wine started off in a quiet low key fashion and has continued ever since, making it the BBC's longest running sitcom and one of the longest running shows in the world, all this from a gentle comedy about the pleasures of growing old.

Season two has the classic line of Compo (Owen), Clegg(Sallis) and Blamire (Bates) and the situation is basically the shenanigans of three elderly men looking to spice up their retirement in an idyllic Yorkshire village (Holmfirth in real life); Blamire tends to get the ideas, Clegg is generally unwilling to get too involved whilst the slovenly Compo is usually the one who sends the plan awry.

One of the joys of Last of the Summer Wine has always been in its large ensemble cast of characters, this second season marks the debut of one of the legendary Wally Batty, the small and put upon husband of archetypal Northern dragon Norah (for some reason Compo has harboured a life long love for Norah and would do anything to be able to straighten her wrinkly stockings).

This second season also saw the departure of lead character Blamire (Michael Bates - who was also playing as an Indian servant in It Ain't Half Hot Mum, became ill and couldn't make any further episodes); Wisely Clarke then brought in the character of Foggy Dewhurst (played by Brian Wilde).

This new release from Roadshow has all 7 episodes from the second season spread over two discs, highlights include Clegg trying to get rid of his "evil" bike in Forked Lightning; The trio becoming salesmen in the Changing Face of Rural Blamire and the first appearance of Wally Batty in Some Enchanted Evening. First class stuff and a must for any British Sitcom fan.
