WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Glam
punk, The New York Dolls were
the biggest almost made it's of
the 1970's, despite releasing
two albums the band never hit
the real big time despite
influencing every other punk
rock band who came after. The
band were too caught up in the
excesses of the

time,
drugs, drugs and more drugs seemed to be the word of the day. Bob Gruen,
the legendary photographer spent 3 years filming the Dolls with a new
fangled "video recorder" and in the classic style of Dylan's
Don't Look Back presents us with a verite account of The Dolls
world. The
style is pretty non linear and no attempt is made to explain the
backstory of the band but that's immaterial as the band are true rock
stars in every sense of the word; Gruen follows the guys as they hit the
clubs of New York, San Francisco and LA, go shopping, hang out with
chicks and generally do the wasted rock god thing.

There
is also plenty of glimpses of the mundane side of life, the driving in
cars, waiting at airports and being interviewed by journos. It will
probably be hard for todays younger viewers to realise how outrageous
the dolls were back in the day so bombarded are we by modern have to
shock musicians. This will definitely have to go down as essential for
not just fans of the band but also fans of seventies rock in general.
