THE LOW DOWN

Follow the life journey of an 80-year-old 45-ton bull sperm whale and witness the spectacular sights at the bottom of the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. Viewers travel with the whale and his family as he fends off an attack from a pod of orcas and comes face to face with animals that were once thought to be mythical – mysterious 15-meter oarfish and the enormous giant and colossal squids of legend.

As the whales dive over 2 kilometers below the surface, the landscape of the deep comes vividly to life – impossibly deep canyons, underwater volcanoes and the highest and longest mountain ranges on Earth. The whale takes us on a rollercoaster ride – from the towering ancient spires of the Lost City, to massive undersea canyons and huge fields of black smokers.

Through the epic journey viewers will discover how, across those 80 years, these seas have changed beyond recognition. The deep ocean is more powerful, yet more sensitive to change than we ever imagined and has the power to give life to the whole planet – or take it away.

THE VERDICT

Also known as Secrets of the Deep, this thrilling and spectacular series is from the same team who brought us the Walking With.. Dinosaurs series, using a mixture of natural footage and amazing CGI the story of this amazing creature is brought to life, travelling back in time to 1929 when the Bull sperm whale is just two years and as he grows we follow him, over the course of two episodes, down the years as he experiences joys and tragedies of a life lived in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

The creatures that live in the great depths of the sea are the least known of any on the planet, as the awesome majesty of this world has remained beyond our reach – until now. Coming to DVD from BBC Video and the makers of the Emmy® Award winning Walking With series, this incredible documentary explores the most mysterious environment on earth, and its fascinating inhabitants – Ocean Odyssey. By using new technological advances, and breathtaking CGI, this awe-inspiring two-part series showcases the most accurate and revealing portrait of the beauty and majesty of the earth’s oceans ever captured. As the years pass we see him lose his family pod to Whalers and in turn father his own offspring but the presence of man is becoming more and more noticable and the series makes plain how far man has gone down the road of destroying the habitats of creatures whilst one of the key sequences sees him doing battle with the colossal squid - stunningly realised and unbelievable to see these two giants of the deep engaged in combat. Bringing the production to a close is a dire warning about the fate of man but a whole new domain for the amazing bull sperm whale.
