ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Richard Wilson, Annette Crosbie

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Voted as 10th best British sitcom ever in a 2004 poll by the BBC One Foot in the Grave was also the show that turned Richard Wilson as the irascible Victor Meldrew into a star name after a long time playing second fiddle in countless shows.

Deliciously black One Foot in the Grave, written by David Renwick, sought to turn the traditional cosy sitcom genre on its head somewhat, outwardly all is sitcom safe; Victor and his long suffering wife Margaret (the excellent Annette Crosbie) live at suburban outpost 19 Riverbank, the kind of home George and Mildred might have aspired to 25 years before but surrealism is never too far away and whilst most of the episodes centre around the latest slight or misfortune to befall Victor there is always that feeling of something under the surface that could spill out at any given moment.

This set contains all 6 episodes from the 1991 third season as well as the 1991 Christmas Special and whilst the show belongs to Wilson he is more than ably supported by Crosbie who plays things aboslutely straight as his wife, also very good are next door neighbours Patrick and Pippa Trench (played by Angus Deayton and Janine Duvitski) who look on in often stunned disbelief at the antics of Victor.

Never less than very funny One Foot in the Grave is a high quality show that stands up well to repeated viewing.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

Extras include the afore mentioned Christmas special and a commentary on the episode The Beast in the Cage from series creator David Renwick and Richard Wilson.
