ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Richard Wilson, Annette Crosbie, Angus Deayton, Janine Duvitski,

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

I don't believe it Mr Grumpy is back. 60 year old Victor Meldrew didn't want to retire but his boss had other ideas and now Victor spends his time annoying his wife and finding ways to pass the time, usually by complaining! Created and written by David Renwick,

Victor Meldrew is one of the great TV characters despite not being overly likeable in himself; not content with badgering his wife (the always excellent Annette Crosbie) Meldrew also finds plenty of time to harass his neighbours - on one side bus driver Pippa and her husband Patrick (who look on the antics of Victor with a certain amount of critical disdain) and on the other side perpetual bore Nick Swainey and his invalid mother. Mrs Warboys, who could always be relied upon to put her foot in it, was another regular.

Plotwise there is never that much going on, whole eppisodes can revolve around Victor having trouble with some one littering his garden but the dialogue is brilliant and the performances spot on, conspiring to create something really exceptionally funny.

This new DVD released by Roadshow, features all six episodes from the second season as well as the 1990 christmas special Who's Listening. One in the Grave is easily one of the better sitcoms of the 1990's and is well worth checking out.

FINAL VERDICT

You will believe it.
