unorthodox young African-American priest who in the mid 1960's becomes an history teacher at St. Augustine, an all-Black Catholic school in Louisiana. Taking over as coach of the basketball team, who are undefeated, Father Verrett uses the talent of his players, especially real star player Travis Porter, to challenge the thinking of the residents of the small town. Matters come to a head when Verrett arranges a match between his undefeated team and a rival, undefeated all-White team.
This is a very powerful drama examining the huge racial prejudices of the south in the 1960's. Written by actor Harold Sylvester, one of the members of the 1965 St Augustine team, it's amazing to realise that this is a true story and that Verrett was instigating the first unsegregated game in the town.
