WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

In turn of the century Australia Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) and younger brother Mikey leave a gang led by older brother Arthur. Troopers (Police) capture Charlie and Mikey in a brothel after an extended gunfight but Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone) offers a proposition – he will pardon both Charlie and Mikey if Charlie brings in their older brother Arthur.

The Troopers take Mikey prisoner and Charlie is given a horse and a gun to go and find Arthur. Whilst Charlie searches for Arthur and passes through some spectacular places in the Australian Outback, Captain Stanley must deal with the consequences once his proposition is known through the town.

There is only one way for this scenario to end, and it is done well, in spite of the violence.

Set in the Australian outback Director Hillcoat has found some of the prettiest spots to film and cleverly reflects the emotional states of the characters by showing either the beauty, or the ugliness of the country-side. The soundtrack, written and performed by Nick Cave, is subtle and complements the story.

The screenplay, also written by Nick Cave, has an interesting mix of characters, although some were one dimensional and clichéd. The actors seemed to work well within their characters with Guy Pearce as Charlie Burns being almost unrecognisable from his days on Neighbours and as the pretty one in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. David Wenham also appears as an uptight well-to-do fop in a disappointing performance.

The extreme violence within The Proposition is not focused on, which intensifies the impact. It portrays, in a matter-of fact manner how harsh the early Australian way of life was including the mindless brutality towards the Aboriginal people.
