ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Sihung Lung,

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Ang Lee's debut movie from 1992 covers familiar ground to anyone who has seen any of his other early films, Lee favourite Sihung Lung plays the elderly Chinese T'ai Chi Ch'uan teacher Mr Chu who retires to New York to live his son and his American daughter

in law, finding himself something of a fish out of water Mr Chu becomes increasingly unwilling to embrace the material aspects of western culture and decides to strike out on his own.

Certainly a bit rawer than one is used to with an Ang Lee but still touching on all the themes that run through his movies, slow moving, almost like a T'ai Chi exercise, Pushing Hands spends probably a little too long on Mr Chu trying to integrate himself but picks up when he begins teaching a T'ai Chi class at the local Chinese school, here

he catches the eye of widowed Mrs Chen. It's quite unusual for a mainstream movie to focus on the elderly, Sihung Lung is pretty much centre of attention throughout and
does a great job, Lee of course has gone on to use him in pretty much all of his movies since. The best part of the movie is the final third when Mr Chu loses his job as a dishwasher in a Chinese restuarant for being too slow but refuses to leave and ends up getting arrested.

Definitely an interesting debut and for any fan of Lee's one worth chcking in with for an early example of his dysfunctional familial relationship ouvre.
