ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Matt Dillon, Debbie Byrne, Bryan Brown,

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Rebel is like an Aussie brat pack movie with musical overtones set during World War 2, starring Matt Dillon as the titular Rebel who is an American marine spending time in Sydney recuperating from wounds suffered in battle, he is keen to get out of Australia

until he falls for married singer Kathy (played by former Young Talent Time alumni Debbie Byrne), she is keen on Rebel but doesn't want to betray her husband, who is away fighting in the war, however lust being what it is Rebel and Kathy are soon jumping into bed together.

Their problems start when Rebel goes awol and Kathy gets word that her husband has been killed in battle, with the US Military on his trail Rebel needs to make plans to escape.

Rebel is an entertaining movie, despite not being sure whether it is a straight drama or a musical, there are regular musical numbers performed by Byrne and her dancers (one of whom is Antoinette Byron from Neighbours) at the club she works in,

with the girls wearing pretty risqué outfits which surely would not have been acceptable back in 1942, not that we are complaining mind. The final third tightens up the tension considerably as Rebel and Kathy have some serious choices to make which will inevitably see them separated. Likely to be classed as a chick flick but definitely worth seeking out.
