ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Kevin Costner, Jennifer Aniston, Shirley MacClaine, Mark Ruffalo

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

The Graduate was one of the biggest movies of the sixties, ground breaking in its portrayal of the sexual mores of two differing generations, Rumour Has It takes some of the elements of the Graduate and weaves them into a great new comedy drama.

Jennifer Aniston plays Sarah Huttinger, whose return home with her fiance Jeff (Mark Ruffalo) convinces her that the sedate, proper, country-club lifestyle of her family isn't for her, and that maybe the Huttinger family isn't even hers. She also learns that her mother may have been the original inspiration for Elaine Robinson, whilst her grand mother (Shirley MacLaine) was the original Mrs Robinson. Handily for the plot Sarah's mother is dead which allows her the chance to discover that her real father may actually be Kevin Costner as dotcom millionaire Beau (her mother had a three day fling with him.

Matters become very complicated when Sarah starts to have quite strong feelings for Beau, more than daughterly feelings too. Scriptwriter Ted Grifin does while to stop all the convoluted parts of the plot getting hand and he and director Rob Reiner also manage to reign some of the ickier elements that could have surfaced (if Beau is her father then Sarah is on the verge of comitting incest of course).

The cast are uniformly excellent and whilst Aniston is the lead and its her movie, Costner in particular proves that he still has that real star quality whilst Shirley MacLaine is a legend and knows it too.

Enjoyably with a good quality script, great for a autumnal Friday night in.

FINAL VERDICT

And heres to you Mrs Robinson.
