ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Japanese anime

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

In a land called Shangri-La there is chaotic co-existence between humans and demons where science and magic are both practised. 500 years beforehand a great demon called Gyumaoh was killed but now his beloved is conducting experiments to raise him and this is giving rise to a negative aura in the lands that the demon populace are affected by and turns them evil.

The hero is a high-ranking Buddhist priest called Genjyo Sanzo who is rather unconventional in that he drinks smokes and gambles and has a proud arrogance about him as well as being an awesome and fearless fighter. He has been sent on a quest by the Merciful Goddess to stop the Gyumaoh revival experiments and he and his three squabbling followers are travelling west to India to do just that. The adventures of the foursome come during their long journey to this other land where many demons stand in their way.

This volume comprises the first four episodes of the "Reloaded" series and as the title suggests it's not the first time we've seen these characters. Their travels are already well underway so it's not a beginning point - but the opening narration adequately explains to newcomers the background of the earlier series from which this continues.

Is It Any Good? The animation quality is not remarkable and there are many lazy moments where the characters are static or have short bursts of activity in "sound-bite" animation rather than free-flowing scenes. Usually this is during fight scenes of which there are many. However during scenes of exposition the stories are quite interesting and varied and easy to follow until the next obligatory fight scene takes over which tend to get a bit tiresome when you've seen a few.
