ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Japanese anime

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

In a land called Shangri-La there is chaotic co-existence between humans and demons where science and magic are both practised. 500 years beforehand a great demon called Gyumaoh was killed but now his beloved is conducting experiments to raise him and this is giving rise to a negative aura in the lands that the demon populace are affected by and turns them evil.

The hero is a high-ranking Buddhist priest called Genjyo Sanzo who is rather unconventional in that he drinks smokes and gambles and has a proud arrogance about him as well as being an awesome and fearless fighter. He has been sent on a quest by the Merciful Goddess to stop the Gyumaoh revival experiments and he and his three squabbling followers are travelling west to India to do just that. The adventures of the foursome come during their long journey to this other land where many demons stand in their way.

This particular release is a full length film comprising a single story in which Sanzo and his party save a young serving girl from a flying bird demon and she invites them to stay at her master's palace. But her master is a shape changing demon and tensions are raised amongst the team when they can no longer be sure who and who isn't really their friend.

Is It Any Good? The animation quality is superior to TV episodes of this series although as always with Anime it varies from lazy to showy and the fighting scenes become very repetitive and samey. But when they are not fighting the story is reasonably involved and interesting.

The basic premise of the series is not really re-iterated in this film and so it might not be the best point of introduction to the Saiyuki universe. Much of the background discussed above that also applies to this film was actually gleaned from watching TV episodes of Saiyuki Reloaded which was being reviewed at the same time. So you probably need a bit of existing knowledge to understand some of who the characters are and what it is they are supposed to be doing in their overall quest.
