ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Jack Nicholson is the best known name although he was not the lead in this. The stars are Warren Oates, Will Hutchins and Millie Perkins.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

It is a Western adventure film.  Cowboys Willett Gashade (Oates) and Coley Boyard (Hutchins) are two gold miners working out in the prairie wilderness when they are approached by a mysterious woman who is offering good money to them to guide her to the town of Kingsley which is several weeks travel by horse.

The woman is a bit vague about her intentions and doesn't even give her name.  Will is suspicious but Coley is easily led and trusting and prepared to take her at face value.  On the way it becomes clear they are being followed and before long a hired gunman called Billy Shear (Nicholson) joins their party and it transpires he is also on the woman's payroll to be her minder and his presence causes friction in the party as they make their slow relentless journey to their destination.

Most of the film is a serviceable enough western although not by any means a classic.  Jack Nicholson shines in his role as the arrogant fast-draw sharpshooter and there is genuine intrigue about just what the woman's plans are and why she needs to get to Kingsley.

Although it has to be said that the actual ending is a bit weak and rather perplexing adding a twist that I'm sure wasn't set up as being justified in any earlier dialogue or if it was then it was an easily missed throwaway line.  I won't say what the twist was of course but it is a bit disappointing.
