THE LOWDOWN

A mammoth 12 disc box set bringing together 8 of the very best Charles Dickens adaptations made by the BBC over the last 30 or so years. One of the greatest of all writers whose pacy and brilliant feel and verve for dialogue makes him particularly suited to television Dickens has long been loved by the BBC and have always lavished a huge amount of money and attention on his books when furnishing them for the small screen.

This fantabulous set features The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Martin Chuzzlewit, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend. The productions range from your archetypal early Sunday evening classic serial of Oliver Twist to the large scale wondrousness that is Our Mutual Friend.

THE VERDICT

Quite simply stunning, this beautifully presented embossed box set features the cream of British acting talent performing in some of the best loved pieces of Victorian drama. Each of the productions has its own flavour and merits, A Christmas Carol from 1977 is a typical studio bound production but the story is particularly suited to that classic BBC feel whilst Our Mutual Friend from the late 1990's is bursting with brilliance, high of budget and big on style, a clear forerunner of last years masterly Bleak House in terms of style.

Not only are the productions wonderfully watchable (over and over again) but the set also looks great on the shelf, handsomely put together The Dickens Collection is a wonderful purchase for any fan of classic British Drama.
