ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale, Moe Tucker

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Anybody who saw The Velvet Underground back in the 1960's would have put money on various members of the band not being around in the 1970's never mind being up for a reunion concert in 1993, this new DVD release from Rhino documents a trio of shows

that Lou, Sterling, John and Moe performed at the L'Olympia Theater in Paris between 15 and 17 June 1993 as part of a promo for an art gallery who were hosting a Velvet's exhibition.

They might look like your dad's mates when you first see them onstage but that's soon dispelled as soon as Venus in Furs kicks in and the same raw power that the band had back in the day is still there, it's urgent, loud and rocking. Lou Reed still can't sing of course and he completely mangles Sweet Jane, easily the best Velvet's song and doesn't even attempt to hit any high notes, he's more in form on Heroin though which is still incredibly powerful (a single song that launched the careers of a hundred Velvet imitators) Sterling Morrison probably has too little do but he proves what an under rated guiatrist he is, especially on Rock N Roll which features some blistering soloing and of course the real star of the band has to be Moe Tucker's drumming, she might look like your gran but there's some real

tribal power in her drumming, she even takes lead vocal on the laid back I'm Sticking With You. I personally always had the most time for John Cale and his lead vocals on Femme Fatale provide the real highlight of the set.

You seldom see archive footage of The Velvet's so this is a great document for the fans and definitely stands up in its own right as an entertaining music release.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

No special features but the release does include a nice four page booklet.
