ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Daryl Hannah, Denise Richards

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Definitely a strange one to classify this, a documentary that includes frequent digressions to a fictional story, Whore is about the world's oldest profession - prostitution, the people involved and the stories of why they do it. Added to this is the

fictional story starring Denise Richards as a grad student, writing a book on prostitution and who, in need of money, is being tempted into the business by her prostitute neighbour Daryl Hannah.

Directed by Luna (Maria Lidon) and based on a very popular Spanish book Yo Puta by Isabel Pisano, Whore (which has also been known variously as The Life and Yo Puta) is very in your face both in visual terms and with some very explicit dialogue, put together over the course of a year the documentary segments feature a number of real life prostitues, male and female, talking about their work, apart from one or two who seem really out of it, they all seem to get a kick out of talking about their exploits.

Added to this are chats with people who visit prostitutes and a long piece following a porn film director as he casts for a movie. Guaranteed to shock but very glossily put together. I'm not sure of the point of the drama inserts with Hannah and Richards, they tend to interrupt the flow and don't have much drive although they do provide something of a relief from the onslaught of stories and images.

The best thing about Whore is that it isn't out to judge anyone but just wants to let people tell their stories.
