WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

This month Roadshow release a couple of sitcoms about quirky characters and their small village lives, the two couldn't be more different, Last of the Summer Wine is almost your archetypal Sunday night cosy sitcom whilst Wild West is a beast of a much darker

hue indeed. Written by Men Behaving Badly creator Simon Nye and starring Dawn French as Mary Trewednack who runs and lives above the post office/village shop with her "girlfriend" Angela Phillips played by the excellent Catherine Tate, (the pair have basically decided to be lesbians until something better comes along.

Definitely left of centre Wild West's biggest enjoyments come from the cast of supporting players that Nye has gathered around Mary and Angela from to the point copper PC Alan Alan; salty old sea dog Old Jake (played by the magnificent David Bradley who has quietly appeared in some of the best TV of all time and never gets the credit he deserves) who harbours not so secret desires to have his way with the girls; Harry is the good looking village handyman and Holly is the village witch who runs her own witchcraft museum.

The series debuted in prime time on BBC1 but definitely seems more like a BBC2 show, the kind of Little Britain/League of Gentlemen vibe it gives off would have no doubt have scared off some of the BBC1's more traditional audience. If you like your comedy a little on the black then Wild West could be right up your street.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

None.

TRIVIA

The village of St Gweep is in reality the village of Portloe in Cornwall.
