ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

The star is Leleti Khumalo as Yesterday with Camilla Walker, Harriet Lenabe, Kenneth Khambula, Lihle Mvelase

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Yesterday is a young mother in the South African village of Rooihek in KwaZulu-Natal. She has a young daughter called Beauty whom she loves very much and who is very inquisitive asking her mother questions about the world that Yesterday cannot properly answer. Yesterday's husband is away in Johannesburg working as a miner and she last saw him at the start of the year. It is now the summer and she has for many months had a racking cough that she hoped would go away by itself - but it has persisted and so she makes the long walk to the clinic which is open every Tuesday.

Many weeks go by until she is able to see the doctor because she is always too far back in the long queue and turned away.

When she finally sees the white lady doctor some tests are carried out and she is sympathetically told she has HIV. But she has only had sex with her husband on his rare trips home and so she know she needs to inform him so he too can be tested. Her husband is angry at first at the suggestion but when he too becomes sick he comes home to die.

A school is being set up nearby and Beauty is due to start the following summer and Yesterday's one remaining hope is that she will live long enough to see her daughter start school.

Is It Any Good? It is a good solid and focussed story which is well told and acted which gives you an eye-opening slice of life into what would seem like a completely different world to many watching - but underneath the cultural differences it demonstrates that love and local community spirit is not that different in other parts of the world.

Overall it's a worthwhile film that holds the attention well.

The first international film ever made in the zulu language.
